What is Shockwave Therapy?

Originally developed in the 1980s to break down kidney stones without surgery, Shockwave Therapy has since evolved into a highly effective, non-invasive treatment for a range of chronic musculoskeletal conditions. It is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for its clinical effectiveness.

This therapy works by delivering high-energy acoustic waves (or impulses) to targeted areas of the body. These impulses help shift damaged tissues—such as tendons, muscles, and ligaments—from a chronic state into an acute healing phase. This stimulates the body’s natural repair process, reduces pain, and improves mobility and function.
Because it’s non-surgical, there’s no risk of infection, tendon rupture, or the complications sometimes associated with injections or more invasive procedures.

What can Shockwave Therapy help with?

Shockwave Therapy has been clinically proven to be highly effective—up to 85% success, compared to around 50% with steroid injections—in treating a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow

  • Rotator cuff (shoulder) injuries

  • Patellar (knee) tendinopathy

  • Bursitis

  • Trigger points and chronic muscular tension

Please note: Shockwave Therapy is not recommended for children, during pregnancy, for individuals with blood disorders, or for generalised pain conditions such as fibromyalgia.

Will it cause me any pain?

Some mild discomfort may be experienced during treatment, but it is generally well-tolerated. The intensity can be adjusted to suit your comfort level.

How many sessions will I need?

While results vary, most people begin to notice improvement after just three to seven weekly sessions, depending on the severity of the condition, your overall health, and lifestyle factors.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are typically mild and short-lived. You may experience slight swelling, redness, or bruising around the treatment area.
